When it comes to burritos, many would argue Phoenix has some of the best heaven-wrapped-in-a-tortilla options around. The marriage between tortilla, beans and rice is a perfect one, but when that union goes full throttle in size and scope, there’s no stopping the possibilities. Let’s face it, big burritos are where it’s at, especially at these Phoenix eateries where bigger is always better.

While the menu is as no-frills as they come (burritos, tacos enchiladas), there’s nothing simple about this Phoenix mainstay’s dedication to putting out quality food. Owned by the De la Cruz family (of El Zocalo Mexican Grille, El Sol Mexican Café & Bakery and Mango’s Mexican Café), the restaurant serves hearty, overstuffed burritos made with rice, black or pinto beans, your choice of meat, cheese and sour cream, all wrapped up in a homemade tortilla made fresh that morning in their bakery. There are also shrimp and veggie options, as well as a meat-only, no-filler burrito for the burrito purist at heart.

Left Coast Burrito

Debuting earlier this year, Left Coast Burrito Co. is making a sizable first impression with local burrito lovers thanks, in large part, to its specialty burritos. With kicky, clever names like the Times New Ramen and the Hello, McFly, the entrée options are guaranteed to pull you in to its tortilla-wrapped goodness. One standout is the El Chattanooga, made with Tennessee hot fried chicken, mac and cheese, collard greens, black beans and rice—guaranteed to leave other burritos in its dust. The food truck rolls throughout the Valley, so check their Facebook page for the latest schedule.

Asadero Toro

Meat lovers, rejoice! Asadero Toro, just a stone’s throw from the Arizona State Fairgrounds, offers the carne asada burrito to end all carne asada burritos. The formula is simple: take one large flour tortilla and stuff it—and we mean stuff it—with nothing but grilled beef. Eat it as-is in all its meat-loving glory, or dress it up with a variety of salsas, peppers and garnishes from the serve-yourself condiments bar. Then wash it down with a horchata or Mexican soda for a refreshing finishing touch.

El Norteno

For those of you who believe breakfast is the most important meal of the day, make a beeline for El Norteno Mexican Food, where they’re serious about serving a breakfast burrito fit for a king. The machaca and egg burrito is stuffed to the brim with moist, flavorful machaca with enough egg to give it that added girth. If carbs are your thing, add the potatoes for an extra $.85. Other breakfast options include steak and egg, chorizo and egg, egg with cheese, and bacon and egg. Now that’s the way to start the day.

El Palacio Mexican Restaurant

While El Palacio is in the far-reaching suburbs of Phoenix—Chandler, to be exact—it is worth a mention. That’s because the restaurant offers the El Bandito, 28 inches and 5 pounds of pure burrito love. Served on a 2-foot long tray, the burrito is stuffed with steak, chicken, pork, chile relleno, vegetables, rice, cheese and beans, and topped with guacamole, sour cream, and red and green chili sauce. El Bandito was recently featured on the Food Network’s “Ginormous Food.” And deservedly so.
