It’s no secret that Sky Harbor International Airport attracts a large amount of travelers and makes a big economic impact, but a study conducted by W.P. Carey School of Business at ASU recently determined that the total economic impact of the airport is more than a whopping $38 billion a year. Also, Terminal 4 is set to include 16 new retail stores and medical clinic, and the Phoenix City Council has approved an extension of the Phoenix Sky Harbor Sky Train worth nearly $100 million. In addition, May statistics for Phoenix Sky Harbor show a 1.9% increase in total passengers compared to May 2016. Sky Harbor served more than 3.8 million passengers in May 2017. Total passengers for the calendar year are up 0.6% compared to the first five months of 2016.
A new light rail station breaks ground at 50th Street. This is the first station added to the existing Valley Metro Rail Line with unique accessibility features. From a wider platform to accommodate mobility devices to enhanced shading, this station is a model of accessibility. Interview future users and learn about its significance to the disability community. The project is the first light rail project under Phoenix Transportation 2050, funded by the support of Phoenix voters.

Scottsdale Inn is currently under renovation and rebuilding, it will open this fall with a new image and a new name: Hotel Adeline. The 4.5-acre property will have 213 guestrooms, including five 700-square-foot king suites, and a 1,800-square-foot ballroom with a center divider that comfortably seats up to 100 guests and a deluxe boardroom accommodating up to 12. Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) is currently presenting special exhibition Dragons and Vines: Inlaid Guitar Masterpieces – A collection of instruments featuring stunning inlay design created by the greatest contemporary North American inlay artists and luthiers. The exhibition is presented by MIM in partnership with the Maryland-based inlay company Pearl Works, with the majority of the pieces coming from the private collection of Larry Sifel (1948–2006), the company’s founder. This special exhibition consists of guitars, banjos, and one ukulele, featuring inlaid artwork created from materials including abalone shell, mother-of-pearl, coral, gold, copper, wood, and others. These materials are manually fitted onto the instruments with diligent precision, transforming each one into a unique masterpiece. Open Now–Sep. 4, 2017.
Experience Desert Botanical Garden in a whole new light with the garden’s Flashlight Tours. Flashlight Tours are sensory adventures to see, hear and feel how the desert nights shimmer. Fashion is extensive at the Phoenix Art Museum. A Tribute to James Galanos opens in August paying homage to the late American designer (1924-2016) with an exhibition spanning five decades of his designs from the permanent collection and private lenders, as well as never before seen photographs from his personal archives. A supporter of the Museum’s programs, Galanos personally donated a group of his designs to the fashion collection in 1990 and participated in several of its events. Highlights will include gowns made for Galanos’ clients including Sybil Harrington, Kitty Carlyle Hart, Nancy Reagan, Ann Bonefory Taylor and Marie Vanderbilt Whitney as well as contemporary collectors including Tatiana Sorokko, and Susan Byram. On display in the Ellman Fashion Design Gallery, the exhibit will be available August 19, 2017 to January 7, 2018.

Peoria’s All-American Festival, presented by APS, will be held July 4 from 5 to 10 p.m. at the Peoria Sports Complex. This coastal-themed playground for children includes The Ballyard, a miniature baseball diamond, and The Shipyard, a play structure and small splash pad set in a seafaring ship. The All-American Festival begins at 5 p.m., including live entertainment, food eating contests, a cornhole tournament, an airplane flyover and family-friendly activities. Two waters zones with more than 15 water inflatables and slides help keep everyone cool. Returning again this year is The Skyscraper, a five-story waterslide with two lanes. The breakfast table is set. Arizona Breakfast Weekend (ABW) returns, July 27-30. Valley chefs and restaurateurs are uniting for an event that celebrates the most important meal of the day: breakfast. The third annual Arizona Breakfast Weekend, sponsored by Hickman’s Family Farms, hits eateries July 27-30. Diners will enjoy special dishes at breakfast and brunch spots around the Valley. Confirmed restaurants so far include: Hash Kitchen – Scottsdale and Arcadia, The Original Breakfast House, Paul Martin’s, Ticoz, Perk Eatery and The Market by Jennifer’s. Nearly 50 restaurants participated last year, and it is anticipated that number will increase this year.
Arizona Craft Beverage, Arizona’s first licensed craft distillery group, won Arizona Distillery of the Year for the second time from the New York International Spirits Competition, announced in May. In addition, Arizona Craft Beverage’s Elgin Distillery, won gold for its Arizona Straight Bourbon in the nation’s top spirits competitions. The Whining Pig opens in downtown Phoenix. The new neighborhood hangout offers craft beers, wine and unique grilled cheese sandwiches. With the aroma of tropical fruits, honey and vanilla, LDV Winery’s new 2014 LDV Voignier defies the status quo and offers boundless excitement. 2014 brought a low yield crop with high fruit intensity, leading to the wine’s unique taste. The 2014 Voignier can be enjoyed on its own or with a wide variety of foods. The oak is in the background but offers spicy notes that will complement the richness of grilled halibut, sea bass, steamed lobster and grilled shrimp with a vanilla beurre blanc sauce. It also works well with Brie cheese topped with fruit and crème brûlée. The 2014 Voignier is priced at $28 per bottle.
Calling all beer lovers. It’s time for the Tap Takeover event at Flanny’s, which will include Tombstone Beers, Dragon Beers and Ballast Point Beers. Tombstone Beers will include IPA, Dank Fruit DIPA, German Pils, Imperial Stout with Piloncillo aged in Bourbon Barrels, Brett Saison aged in Chardonnary Barrels and Sour Wheat with mango and toasted oak. Dragon Beers will offer IPA, Witt, Stronghold, Lager and DIPA. The Ballast Point Beers offered will be Sculpin, Bonito Blonde, Tart Peach, Sea Monster and Barmy. The Tap Takeover will take place on Thursday, July 20 from 5 p.m. – 9 p.m.

Cold Beers and Cheeseburgers will soon open its seventh location in Central Phoenix, and the official opening date will be confirmed soon. In addition to the atmosphere, diners will also take enjoy the restaurant’s award-winning burgers, with a variety of flavorful options.
