It’s no secret that Sky Harbor International Airport attracts a large amount of travelers and makes a big economic impact, but a study conducted by W.P. Carey School of Business at ASU recently determined that the total economic impact of the airport is more than a whopping $38 billion a year. Terminal 4 is set to include 16 new retail stores and medical clinic, and improvements are to be completed by the end of 2017. 

Downtown Phoenix’s first major grocery retailer is finally on its way thanks to RED Development’s Block 23, the highly anticipated mixed-use project. The development will be home to a Fry’s Food Store, approximately 330 apartments, creative office space, restaurants and retail uses along with above – and below – grade parking. Roosevelt Row’s First Fridays’ guests will be in even more awe as it has recently expanded north on Moreland Street (between Second and Third Streets).Roosevelt Row, Artlink Inc., and Phoenix Center for the Arts collaborate on the expansion due to abundance of First Friday attendees throughout the past decade. Strum to the beat of the Dragons and Vines: Inlaid Guitar Masterpieces exhibit at the Musical Instrument Museum. The exhibit presents a collection of instruments featuring stunning inlay design created by the greatest contemporary North American inlay artists and luthiers. This special exhibition consists of guitars, banjos, and one ukulele, featuring inlaid artwork created from materials including abalone shell, mother-of-pearl, coral, gold, copper, wood, and others. The instruments’ artwork range from snarling dragons to exquisite floral patterns, and all displayed instruments are of limited editions or one-of-a-kind creations. 

Take the “yellow brick road” to the Herberger Theater Center and take enjoy The Wizard of Oz presented by Valley Youth Theater. The musical's classic songs are performed by a live orchestra that accompanies Dorothy and her little dog Toto as they are swept away by a huge tornado from her farm in Kansas to the magical land of OZ. The Wizard of Oz will be presented Friday, June 9 – Sunday, June 25, and prices vary. The Herberger Theater Center will also present 1070 in association with New Carpa Theater Co.  Guests will observe the depiction of a Latino immigrant family. It will be presented Friday, June 23 – Sunday, July 9. 

This summer take an unforgettable adventure with the family and stay cool while doing it. The SEA LIFE Arizona Aquarium unveiled a new $1 million Colorado River Adventure exhibit on May 19. This interactive playground takes kids on an adventure along the Colorado River, also known as the “lifeline of the Southwest”. Starting at the Rocky Mountains and ending at the Sea of Cortez, kids learn how to conserve water firsthand by controlling the precious resource on the large-scale water table and reading the various educational and colorful posters hung around the exhibit.  The little ones will twist, pump and scoop water as they learn about the environmental footprint cities, such as Phoenix, have on the river. The exhibit, located in the aquarium at Arizona Mills, is open 10 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays and 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Sundays.

Check out a variety of cold-blooded creatures at the new Rainforest Reptiles exhibit at Butterfly Wonderland. The exhibit features exotic reptiles and amphibians that originate from areas all around the world. A few of these animals include a Mata Mata Turtle, Asian Water Dragon and Leaf-tailed Gecko.  Keeper Talks will take place at 11:30 a.m. daily by animal specialists, so head over to Butterfly Wonderland to check out the not-to-be-missed Rainforest Reptiles exhibit. 

Experience the Wild West like never before and step into the boots of a cowboy or cowgirl for the day. Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West will feature Western Wednesdays, a children’s program held every Wednesday throughout the month of June. Children will make and throw a lasso, design their ranch’s brand, round up balloons, and hear stories around a lifelike campfire. In addition, children will hear from living historian and award-winning author Lee Anderson about the responsibilities of working ranchers of the Old and New West. Through a gallery exploration, children will apply what they’ve learned by seeing authentic Old West tools of the trade, including spurs, Stetson hats, saddles and ropes. Western Wednesdays is geared to ages 6 through 14, and RSVP is requested. 

Just in time for the summer, OdySea in the Desert introduces a new and very cool, indoor attraction: “Polar Play.”  Guests will be welcomed with a coat and gloves as they enter Arizona’s very first ice bar and polar experience offering a journey to the north and south poles. As visitors travel through a portal into an icy world, all the walls, the bar, and even the benches are made from ice. Plentiful games, such as shuffleboard, corn hole and checkers, add to the fun. An educational Polar Play app allows guests to explore interesting facts about both the north and south poles.  After leaving the “Polar Zone,” the journey continues as guests re-enter The Lodge where they are met with a warm fire, delicious food and a variety of drinks. “Polar Play” is open daily from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. Admission is $15 for ages 13+ and $10 for children ages 2-12.

Arizona’s coffee shop community continues to flourish with the opening of Press Coffee Roaster’s newest location in Downtown Phoenix. Press Coffee at The Muse located at Central and McDowell will open their doors on June 8.  In addition to award-winning specialty coffees, the new location will introduce an expanded menu that will include beer and wine. The 2,000-square-foot café will also house a learning space that will be utilized for Coffee 101 tastings and other savory events. From a hobby started in the garage to Arizona’s first cider house and taproom: two brothers will soon introduce Cider Corps. After Jason Duren suffered injuries serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, he and his brother Josh came up with the idea to brew cider from home. Since then the Duren’s signed an impressive agreement with Fox Restaurant Concepts to have Cider Corps carried in all Fox restaurants, and they have participated in several collaborations. Cider distribution is projected to begin in July, and plan to open the taproom by Veterans Day

Listed among “21 Best Mexican Restaurants in America” and the “10 Best Taco Spots in the U.S.”, Tacos Tequila Whiskey has recently graced Phoenix with its presence. Barrio Brewing Co. has taken off from Tucson and landed next to the Mesa-Phoenix Gateway airport. Bring your brew crew to sip on Arizona’s premier lineup of beers while taking in the magnificent view that will satisfy aviation enthusiasts and ale aficionados alike. The longest-operating brewery in AZ brought a small piece of Old pueblo history and the beloved Barrio atmosphere from Tucson to the East Valley. Enjoy craft beer flights and tastings at the new location. The restaurant opened on May 1 and is currently serving lunch and dinner and will begin serving breakfast in June.

Celebrate the most important meal of the day by treating yourself to delicious cuisine during Arizona Breakfast Weekend. Lovers of eggs, bacon and pancakes will congregate at restaurants, diners and hotels around the Valley of the Sun as renowned chefs cook up scrumptious delights to start the day off right. During July 27-30 Breakfast Weekend will offer three dining price points ($7, &10 or $15) and each restaurant will create a unique dish or combination of dishes that will correspond with one of the price points. Last year nearly 50 restaurants participated and that number is expected to increase this year.
