PHOENIX (Aug. 19, 2009) — SportsTravel Magazine has announced that the P.F. Chang’s Rock ’n’ Roll Arizona Marathon has been nominated for a 2009 SportsTravel Award.
The award honors the world’s best sports events. Events are nominated and then voted upon by the readers of SportsTravel, the sports world's event magazine. Criteria for nomination include superior organization of and attendance, the value of experience for competitors and spectators, and how the site or venue served to enhance the event.
The annual Rock ’n’ Roll Arizona Marathon and ½ Marathon event is popular among distance runners for its music-filled atmosphere, warm winter conditions and qualifier status for the Boston Marathon. In 2009, more than 37,000 participants tackled a fast course that snaked through the streets of Phoenix, Scottsdale and Tempe. The event also includes a Health & Fitness Expo at the Phoenix Convention Center.
“Since the location of the event is a major part of the criteria for being nominated, the people of Phoenix should take great pride in knowing that an event held in their city is being recognized for its excellence,” said Timothy Schneider, publisher of SportsTravel, which organizes the TEAMS Conference & Expo. "SportsTravel readers are the leaders of the sports-event industry and they really know what it takes to execute a high-quality athletic event.”
Official ballots are available in the August and September issues of SportsTravel magazine. Readers also can vote online at www.SportsTravelMagazine.com . The ballot includes nominees in amateur, collegiate and professional categories. Voters will also pick best new sports event and an overall Sports Event of the Year from among the nominated events.
Winners will be announced at the TEAMS 2009 Conference & Expo, Oct. 13-17, in New Orleans. The TEAMS Conference and Expo is the world’s largest annual gathering for the sports-related travel industry.
