Second British Airways flight resumes at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. After a successful second nonstop flight to London Heathrow Airport for British Airways in May and June, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport announces that the airline is bringing back the additional service three days a week. Beginning March 27, 2018, British Airways will operate a second flight on Tuesdays and Fridays. Airport officials say that this is a reflection of the increased demand. This has also been demonstrated by the recent addition of Condor’s nonstop service between Phoenix and Frankfurt, which will begin May 2018. British Airways marked its 21th anniversary of service in Phoenix in July. The airline will continue to offer its daily nonstop flight BA290 arriving in Phoenix at 5:30 p.m. and departing for London at 7:40 p.m.

Arizona Grand Resort & Spa completes $13 million renovation of all 744 guest suites. Nestled at the base of America’s largest urban park and wilderness preserve, the newly transformed Arizona Grand Resort & Spa now features a residential-style look in all 744 guest suites, offering a true “home away from home” experience. Highlights include new hardwood-style flooring in all guest suite living rooms, a fresh color palette and new paint throughout, new carpet in all guest suite bedrooms and new “soft goods” from bedding to drapery and sheers.  New sofa beds in the guest suite living rooms, walk-in showers featuring glass partitions and new artwork round out the list of upgrades. As of September 11, all bookable suites will be new.  As the region’s only AAA Four Diamond all-suite resort, Arizona Grand features spacious one and two-bedroom suites and is known for its 7-acre Oasis Water Park, 18-hole golf course and 20,000 sq ft athletic club and spa.

 

Named the “Most Popular Hotel” and “Best Value Hotel” on TripAdvisor.com, The Clarendon Hotel and Spa will undergo $2 million worth of upgrades in its guest rooms, public areas, restaurant, and rooftop deck. Guests will be pleased as the hotel will feature a new parking area, and the guest rooms are set to include new beds, artwork, window coverings, shower controls and more.  The renovation has already begun and will take place for the remainder of the year.

 

Need a getaway in paradise? The JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa, which was recently honored as “Arizona’s Best Staycation Resort” by Phoenix Magazine, is embarking on Phase II of its Just A Splash poolside enhancement program with the addition of six new, luxury cabanas. From now through September 30, 2017, guests can enjoy the resort's SPLASH Into Summer package with rates beginning at $169 per night and includes overnight accommodations, a daily $50 resort credit and resort fee (a $29 savings). A portion of the proceeds from the SPLASH package will benefit the Children's Miracle Network. The package is offered Sunday through Thursday only.

Calling all pizza lovers. The 3rd Annual Phoenix Pizza Festival in downtown Phoenix will feature nearly 15 pizza vendors, dessert food trucks, craft beer stations, related food vendors and festival with lawn games, live bands, and a kid’s craft zone. The Phoenix Pizza Festival has again partnered with Downtown Phoenix Inc. as a charity beneficiary.. The festival takes place on Saturday, November 18 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Margaret T. Hance Park. It is priced at $10 for entry, and pizza vendors will serve $2-$4 slices, full pies and everything in between. It is suggested to purchase tickets online, as they are expected to sell out before gates open.

 

The iconic Wrigley Mansion – an architectural wonder first constructed by chewing gum industrialist William Wrigley Jr. back in 1929 – undergoes a $1 million refresh. It’s one of Arizona’s most iconic addresses and guests at the grand hilltop property can now enjoy a fresh new look and feel throughout with modernized enhancements: from its freshly paved driveway, new air conditioning,  foyer redesign, to a welcoming entry area and revamped Breakfast Room.. Jazz it up at The Nash for its 5th anniversary. To celebrate, The Nash namesake Lewis Nash will host a jam-packed weekend for the anniversary, with major events planned throughout the month of October. The Nash will feature artists Emmet Cohen, Banda Magda, Francine Reed and many more. The crown jewels of the celebration are tributes to Dizzy Gillespie and Ella Fitzgerald in honor of their 100th birthdays during a weekend celebration on October 7 and 8, featuring world-renowned artists Roberta Gambarini, Roy Hargrove, Sharel Cassity, Cyrus Chestnut, John Lee and Lewis Nash, plus a Big Band Show with Darcy James Argue, and a special Nash Members Only event with Canadian saxophone master Cory Weeds. Ballet Arizona announces its 2017-2018 season. The only professional ballet in the Valley kicks off its season for a relaxing evening under the Arizona sky as the company continues its 20-year tradition for Ballet Under the Stars. Community performances will take place from September 21 through September 30 at five Valley locations. Free and open to the public, Ballet Under the Stars allows the local community to enjoy dance in a unique outdoor setting complete with a stage, lighting, costumes and beautiful Arizona weather.

 

Find out how archaeologists rediscover history from pieces of pottery in Fragments: Broken Bowls Tell More Tale, a new exhibit at Pueblo Grande Museum opening on October 26. Using local and traded examples, Fragments invites visitors to see how sherds help archaeologists piece together new ideas about the Hohokam and who they traded with for hundreds of years. Visitors will also have the chance to test their own research detective skills. Interactives and 3-D printed replica pottery sherds in the exhibit provide a hands-on opportunity for guests to discover the tales pottery fragments can tell for themselves. The exhibit will be on display through August 2018, and the result of collaborative efforts between the City of Phoenix, Pueblo Grande Museum, the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, Arizona State University’s School of Human Evolution and Social Change, and Stax3D. PGM guests will also have the chance to celebrate International Archaeology Day with a full day of archeology fun on Saturday, October 21. Major fashion vibes at the Phoenix Art Museum. A Tribute to James Galanos opens in mid-August paying homage to the late American designer (1924-2016) with an exhibition spanning five decades of his designs from the permanent collection and private lenders, as well as never before seen photographs from his personal archives. A supporter of the Museum’s programs, Galanos personally donated a group of his designs to the fashion collection in 1990 and participated in several of its events. Highlights will include gowns made for Galanos’ clients including Sybil Harrington, Kitty Carlyle Hart, Nancy Reagan, Ann Bonefory Taylor and Marie Vanderbilt Whitney as well as contemporary collectors including Tatiana Sorokko, and Susan Byram. On display in the Ellman Fashion Design Gallery, the exhibit will be available August 19, 2017 through January 7, 2018. 

 

Do you like ghost stories? Phx Rising Tour Co. teams up with the “Boo Crew” at Phoenix Ghost Tours to offering a monthly downtown Phoenix Walking Ghost Tour. This 90-minute walking tour of the historical center of Phoenix includes the rich history, the scandalous endeavors, and the mysterious paranormal activity these buildings contain. Black Theatre Troupe announces its 2017-18 season with an arresting array of theatrical tales that chronicle the African American experience. The azcentral Food & Wine Experience is set to have a special guest at its two day culinary event. The ever-loved Amazing Jake’s will soon be Jake’s Unlimited, and it will have more games, food, drinks and entertainment than ever before. The popular family entertainment destination is undergoing a $4.5 million renovation and rebranding, which will debut December 2017. Exciting new attractions include a huge dual-level laser tag arena, VIP bowling suites, eight mini bowling lanes, an open-space bumper car arena with the newest bumper cars, a custom-designed carnival-style ride adding to the existing collection of rides, more than 170 arcade games, fun midway games, a full redemption store, and an expanded kid zone. For the adults, Jake’s Unlimited will offer extended hours with Jake’s After Dark. This happy hour starts at 8 p.m. every night, after the park closes, so there is no admission fee. The nightly after-hours event will include DJs, food specials, drink specials, and attraction specials. It will be closed for construction Monday through Thursday, starting Monday, Aug. 21, but will remain open to the public Friday through Sunday. This construction schedule is slated to continue through September.

Get spooky at the 7th Annual Balloon Spooktacular as Salt River Fields lights up the Valley skies with glowing hot air balloons and fireworks. The festival will be sure to get guests in the spooky spirit with tethered hot air balloon rides, live music, a free KidsZone, a Spook Trail, costume contest, and over 4,000 pounds of candy. It will take place Salt River Fields on Friday, October 27 and Saturday, October 28 from 5 p.m. – 9:30 p.m., and tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for children ages 3-12, and children ages 2 and under are free.

The Valley of the Sun is welcoming the award-winning fast-casual sandwich restaurant Rubicon Deli. It is opening two new locations here in Greater Phoenix. The Scottsdale location is scheduled to open towards the end of this year, and the Phoenix location is scheduled to open in spring of 2018. Since opening in 1994, Rubicon Deli has been known for its flavorful bread baked in-house, its use of fresh ingredients, and positive environmental practices. The restaurant offers sandwiches, salads, sides, scratch soups, acai bowls and more. Guests will also be delighted with trendy and definitively dapper industrial settings with outdoor seating, great music, and upbeat friendly service.

 

SPORTS/GOLF

The 2017 Arizona Fall League schedule has been released featuring six teams comprised of many of Major League Baseball’s top prospects from every organization. The league plays Monday-Saturday from mid-October through the Saturday prior to Thanksgiving in November in six Phoenix-area spring training Stadiums. Opening day is October 10.
