Just like the Greater Phoenix resorts that offer budget-friendly specials throughout the summer, so do the best courses in this golf mecca. Bring some sunblock and plenty of water and tee it up at premier courses that cost a fraction of their peak-season rates. We’ll highlight some of these courses and deals throughout the summer on The Hot Sheet.

I recently teed it up at Lookout Mountain Golf Club at the Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs Resort, a course I’ve always felt was overlooked on the Phoenix golf landscape. It doesn’t get the hype some top-rated courses in the Valley receive, but this north Phoenix layout that winds though the Phoenix Mountains is definitely worth a visit.

The first several holes of the course wind through tall trees and rolling terrain. Fun holes for sure, but nothing heart-stopping. It’s at the eighth hole that Lookout Mountain begins it’s roller-coaster ride through mountainous terrain with a downhill, dogleg par-5.

After the eighth, there are several more holes that feature elevated tees with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and urban cityscape. The par-4 12th and 14th holes each tempt golfers with risk-reward elevated tee shots to greens awaiting far below: Try to cut the corner over the desert for a shot at the green or play it safe out in the fairway. Your call.

Hole 10 Lookout Mountain Golf Club

Hole 10 is aptly named “Picturesque Pointe”

Lookout Mountain is managed by Troon Golf and the company’s trademark customer service was once again on display. A forecaddie was on the course handing out iced mango-scented towels, which can be best be described as “The most refreshing things on Earth.”

Our round at Lookout Mountain was well worth $41 on a Sunday morning in July and I’d be happy to pay it again. Check their available tee times online where I’ve seen weekday rates for as low as $29.
