With summer still in full swing, we bring you ways to experience the city in the comforts of A/C, and ways to get out and enjoy the great outdoors at the coolest times of day. Check out our top things to do in Phoenix this weekend:
Penske Racing Museum
While the area’s next NASCAR race is still several months away, race fans and gearheads can get their auto kicks at the Penske Racing Museum. More than four decades of Penske racing history is on display at the museum, including multiple NASCAR rides and Indianapolis 500 winners. Check out the museum’s boutique shop where you can find one-of-a-kind car parts signed by Penske Racing Team drivers.
Night hikes at the City of Phoenix desert preserves
Even the most seasoned Phoenix hikers know midday summer treks are never a great idea. And sometimes the call of sleep outweighs the desire for a cool early-morning hike. But did you know you can wait ’til the summer sun sets and hit the trails under moonlight? South Mountain, North Mountain, Piestewa Peak and the Sonoran Preserve all keep their trails open until 11 p.m. nightly. Just be sure to pack a flashlight or headlamp and mind your step while on your evening jaunt. And though the trails may stay open late, the parking lots at the preserves close several hours earlier, so make plans to find a nearby lot instead.
Ancient Ales, Modern Science at the Arizona Science Center: August 9
If you fit into the “beer-loving historian” demographic, we’ve got your Saturday night planned. The Arizona Science Center’s second annual summer party is going with the Ancient Ales, Modern Science theme, in correlation with their ongoing Lost Egypt: Ancient Secrets, Modern Science exhibition. In addition to sampling the goods from local breweries, experts will be on hand dropping knowledge about the history of beer, women and beer, how Egyptian culture shaped the modern brewing processes used today, and more. Plus, the whole Science Center will be open for partygoers to experience.
Take in the tunes at a live music venue
Whether you’re looking to cut a rug at a honky tonk bar, kick back with a night of jazz, or headbang the night away, Phoenix has a live music venue for you. We’ve rounded up more than two dozen local venues where you can experience live music most nights. Did we miss your favorite spot? Let us know!
I’ve heard it many times over the years: How do I possibly play golf during the summer? Easy. I play early and cheap. As locals know, summer can still be a great time to tee it up thanks to rates that are slashed to a fraction of their peak season rates, even at the area’s finest courses. In fact, I get in far more golf during summer than the rest of the year. Just this past weekend, I played the Arizona Biltmore Golf Club for a mere $25 at 7:30 on a pleasant Sunday morning. This weekend I’ll head to the Champions course at the TPC Scottsdale where $49 will get you all the golf you can play in a day (based on availability, of course). Their all-you-can-play deal runs through September 14 and is just $39 Monday to Thursday.
Those are just a couple examples of the many great deals available during the summer. Find a Phoenix golf course at our website and check with them about their summer specials.
