Overview

The popular Glendale-based Arizona Winds presents its season finale concert “High Adventure”. The band, under the baton of its Music Director and Conductor, Colonel Rich Shelton (USAF, Ret.), will take the audience on a tour-de-force of “High Adventure” from the high seas with the swashbuckling “Sea Hawk”, Errol Flynn, to Captain Jack Sparrow and the “Pirates of the Caribbean”, and from Robin Hood in the Sherwood Forest to the Indiana Jones-like adventures of fictional cartoon character Tintin.

“This is a beautiful mix of music, with gorgeous soaring melodic lines, that captures the real essence and imagination of the adventurer in all of us”, remarked the band’s director, Rich Shelton. “This music is so richly programmatic that the audience members can literally close their eyes and be transported to their very own imaginary places of adventure with these characters. It’s just really a fun program”, continued Colonel Shelton.

The program opens with an exciting overture, appropriately titled High Adventure, which sets the musical menu for the rest of the concert. Stephen Melillo’s Erich!, and The Gift of Love & Epilogue from Erich!, take us on a high seas adventure with a tribute to the 1940’s motion picture composer Erich Korngold who wrote the musical scores to such memorable old films as The Sea Hawk, Captain Blood, The Adventures of Robin Hood, Kings Row and many others. The first half of the program concludes with a thrilling medley of themes from the 1991 American romantic action adventure film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.

The second half of the program includes Tintin: Prisoners of the Sun, inspired by The Adventures of Tintin, a comics series by Belgian cartoonist Hergé. The story tells of a young reporter named Tintin, his dog Snowy, and friend Captain Haddock as they travel through Andean villages, mountains and rain forests to rescue their kidnapped friend Professor Calculus.

The adventure continues with music from Walt Disney’s 2006 American fantasy swashbuckler film, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, the adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow aboard his ill-fated ship, The Black Pearl. The program draws to a close with the Adventure Tale of Professor Alex, a fictitious archeologist professor in search of ancient treasures and the immortal fountain of youth described on a mysterious map he discovers.
