Overview

The Arizona Winds’ season opener, Sunday, October 22nd, features the music of John Philip Sousa in a concert filled with compositions by America’s March King that most modern-day Americans have not heard before.

Sousa’s Cubaland is one of his very popular concert suites of the day, reflecting Sousa’s rich Portuguese heritage and depicting the rule of Cuba under the Spanish, American and Cuban governments in the years 1875, 1898, and 1925 respectively. In addition to Sousa’s Invincible Eagle March, The National Game March, George Washington Bicentennial March, The Thunderer and The Fairest of the Fair March, The Arizona Winds will feature two of Sousa’s waltzes, Flashing Eyes of Andalusia and La Reine de La Mer, as well as his cornet solo, I’ve Made Plans for the Summer, and several Sousa-inspired modern compositions.
