Step back in time and experience the stunning wildlife, desert flora and rugged red rocks of the Verde Canyon from the unique vantage point of a refurbished vintage train car. The Verde Canyon Railroad winds its way along the Verde River from Clarkdale to Perkinsville on a four-hour journey through 110 years of history.
Whether you’re looking for a memorable outing for the whole family or a romantic getaway, Verde Canyon Railroad makes for an awe-inspiring adventure. The 20-mile ride passes through historic trestles, bridges, ancient Native American ruins and a century-old 734-foot tunnel. You’ll travel the rare ribbon where high desert meets riparian wonderland, an area only accessible by rail. Looking out from your luxurious coach and open-air car, you’ll get a view of the Arizona that used to be, untouched by development.
Plus, at a less-than-two-hour drive from Phoenix, it makes for an ideal day trip or overnighter in neighboring Sedona.
How to Get to Verde Canyon Railroad
Back to Top of ListThe road to the depot in Clarkdale winds through desert shrublands and mountains along the I-17. If you’re looking to make a day of the drive, stop at the lone-standing and iconic Rock Springs Cafe in Black Canyon City for a slice of pie along your route. Also along the way is Arcosanti, the visionary work of architect Paolo Soleri, blending innovative architecture, sustainable living and vibrant arts in a unique desert community.
Make sure to arrive early for your Verde Canyon Railroad ride to enjoy time at the railroad’s southwestern-style depot and John Bell Museum. Surrounding the depot is a shaded patio where you can grab a bite from the Copper Spike Cafe or enjoy a craft beer or margarita from the outdoor bar before boarding.
On select Saturdays throughout the year, catch a special presentation from Liberty Wildlife and get up close with raptors and other native Sedona wildlife at the depot prior to the 1 p.m. train departure.
