Fountain Hills

The closest IDA-certified Dark Sky Community to Metro Phoenix, Fountain Hills, has the neighboring McDowell Mountains to thank for its surprisingly dark nights. Pack an evening picnic and stretch out on a blanket at Golden Eagle Park to catch a glimpse of the Milky Way.

Development is currently underway at the International Dark Sky Discovery Center, a science facility that, once opened, will be home to the largest telescope in the Greater Phoenix area, a Hyperspace Planetarium and Night Sky Experience Exhibit Hall.

Tonto National Forest

Designated as an International Dark Sky Park in 2019, Tonto National Forest offers a stargazing experience like no other, preserving the night sky just as it would have appeared to the ancient Salado people hundreds of years ago.

With its commitment to protecting these celestial views, the park hosts a variety of stargazing and interpretive astronomy programs, making it a fantastic destination for both casual sky watchers and astronomy enthusiasts. Families will love the Junior Ranger Night Explorer activities, where kids can learn about constellations and planets in a fun, hands-on way.

Lost Dutchman State Park

Nestled at the base of the Superstition Mountains, Lost Dutchman State Park offers a stargazing experience that’s as captivating as its legends. Its location away from city lights creates ideal conditions for a moonlit hike, where the night sky puts on a show of stars and constellations. The park’s serene desert landscape adds a touch of magic to your evening adventure, making it a perfect spot to unwind under the stars.

San Tan Mountain Regional Park

Just south of Phoenix, San Tan Mountain Regional Park is a hidden gem for nighttime outdoor enthusiasts.
